A new slouchy top | NEWLOOK 6246
With temps at 63 degrees F this morning, blue skies and oh-so-bright sunshine, it feels more like Spring than Winter, and my new top fits right in the Spring theme with its soft lavender shade of purple.
From my earlier post you may recall my youngest daughter gifted me with this beautiful, sheer, lavender knit fabric for Christmas. Did I say it was sheer?! It is so sheer that even doubling the fabric was still too sheer, so I lined the bodice with a soft white knit from the stash that, with a significant flaw, coupled with too small yardage to make a top on its own, was perfect to line the bodice of this top. NEWLOOK 6246 view B a slouchy, boxy-shaped 3/4 length sleeve knit top pattern was used. Cut a size 10, and the only modification I made was to take in a little under the arms' side seams to make it a little less 'boxy-ish'. I doubled the sheer lavender on the arms and left them un-hemmed. I like the casual look of the doubled sheer knit 'rolling' slightly there.
The neckline is maybe a little too wide, but is something I can live with. Used a piece of unlined sheer lavender fabric for the neckline. I like the contrast of the sheer lavender at the neckline and sleeves against the white knit-lined bodice.... it is subtle yet a little interesting.
This also completes my January 'Make a Garment a Month Challenge'.
Goes perfect with a rtw pair of jeans! It's that kinda' day!

ReplyDeleteAccording to a sewing show on TV I happened to catch this past weekend, the un-hemmed, rolled edges on the sleeves are "in" with the latest style.

DeleteThat's a perfect little top - What a great idea to layer over the flawed fabric and get a home for that. The sheer as contrast would look so lovely in real life - I'm sure the photo does not do it justice. I like the boat neckline on this top - it does seem to sit nicely on you.
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad now I'd 'stashed' the flawed material and noted as such on the remnant, as it was perfect for this project! I think I just couldn't bear to throw it away at the time. Thank you Sarah Liz!

DeleteYou look great! I am about to start this pattern too. The directions say to use a 5/8 seam. It seems unusual for knit fabric. Did you use 5 / 8 seam?
ReplyDeleteHi Darlene! Thank You! Yes, I cut a size 10, sewed 5/8" seams on my knit fabric(s) at the shoulders and armscyes. Because I was afraid this would be a little too 'boxy', I took 5/8" in under the arm(s) tapering down 5" to the edge of the fabric, then minimal seam allowance for the rest of the seam. As a pear shape, I need that little 'extra' at the hemline. I only sewed a 1/4" seam allowance on the arm seams with my serger as I've found NEWLOOK patterns are a little tight on me there. With all the seams I came back with my serger, using its differential feed and cutting blades, to serge the seamlines and tidy things up after checking for fit. Hope that helps! Good luck with your top..... I absolutely love mine and will be making it again.
