A new top in the making

Having thoroughly enjoyed participating in Make a Garment a Month Challenge last year, I am excited to participate again this year and this will be my first 2015 make.... a new top from NEWLOOK 6246.  As you can see from the photo below, I have made the pants before, (you can read all about them here) but not the shirt.  This is a slouchy, 3/4 length sleeve top for stretch knits.
My daughter, Melissa, gave me 2 yards of this beautiful, lightweight, very thin and very sheer soft lavender knit fabric for Christmas and it just seemed 'right' for this shirt.  May I also say, that this soft lavender color is stepping outside my usual 'color' comfort zone but am excited to see (and wear!) the finished top.
Last evening was spent cutting everything out.  The bodice will be lined with a 1 yard remnant of white cotton knit that was flawed in a couple of places, but will be unnoticeable as a 'lining'.  Not having enough of the white cotton knit to also line the sleeves, the lavender fabric will be doubled there.  Even one layer of the lavender was too 'sheer' to think about on my arms, but two layers will be fine.  The slight color/texture difference of the sleeves against the bodice should be interesting..... I hope.  Seams will be serged and the lavender and lining fabrics will be treated as 'one'.
So looks like 2015 is off to a 'brighter' start for my wardrobe with soft lavender!  Happy Sewing Everyone!

  1. It's such a beautiful colour, definitely your palette. I'm surprised that this lavender is stepping outside your colour comfort zone because you look lovely in soft pastels. The fabric is so light and fine, it will be so comfy to wear. Your 2015 sewing is off to a good start! By the way, I finished my daughter's sweater and the jersey turned out easy to sew, what a relief! Now I wish I had bought some of it for myself :)

    1. Isn't that the way it is?! So glad the top turned out easy to sew.... the fabric was so pretty and you could just 'feel' the softness in your pictures..... she will love her new pretty things you made for her! I seem to usually turn to the boring creams, grays and whites.... but working with this soft color makes me feel happy and think of spring.

    1. Got to thinking that a fitted waistband pair of pants might be too much to tackle after our on-the-go holidays. Still want to do those..... just not my first project for this year!

  3. I'm sure that lovely lavender will look great on you with your coloring! I think you're so brave to sew with those fine, stretchy fabrics. They take a lot more skill and talent than something more like plain ol' cotton!

    1. Truth-be-told, I'm making it easy on myself by combining this fine, thin fabric with the cotton knit and treating as one. Am finding that it sort of 'sticks' to the white knit and that helps stabilize everything.

  5. I think the colour will suit you nicely :).

I think the idea of sheerer sleeves and a more solid bodice will work well. I don't envy you the task of sewing this fine fabric, but you always manage to tackle these challenging tasks well!

    1. Before my hair turned silver, my natural coloring was the 'warm' tones..... but now it's the 'cool' tones.... so am thinking this soft lavender will be fine. For some reason I just do not have one single 'purple' toned thing in my closet, so this will be a first!

    1. Those pants are one of my most favorites I've made to-date!I A simple, elastic-waist, comfortable pair of pants. I added a cargo-style pocket. You can see them and read my review here: http://pieceworktreasures.blogspot.com/2014/05/newlook-6246-pants-new-wardrobe-staple.html
Thank you for the 'color' encouragement! This little top is half-done and I think I'm gonna' really like it.

  7. This will be so pretty! One of my favorite tops was made from that color. It is terrific with gray hair.
