Boxy Sweatshirt | Burda 02/2017 #111A Easy Sweatshirt

If you want a comfy, boxy, easy-to-make sweatshirt with an updated modern look.... then this is your pattern!  Burda 02/2017 #111A Easy Sweatshirt.
A wide boxy style with this really cool triangular piece inserted in each side instead of traditional side seams.
From the back you can see it is a slouchy fit.  Nice!  I am wearing this constantly!  Wearing the white Ottobre pants here today.
You can see the triangular side seam pieces more clearly in Burda's line drawing.  The diagonal front seams actually hide an inner kangaroo pocket, but the pocket did not work for me.  It was extra bulk in the front and hung down in an unsightly way.  View A is meant to be made with one color fabric, and View B is meant to be color-blocked.

I made a size 38, with 3/8" serged seams, with no other modifications other than removing the hidden front pocket.  Laying flat on the floor shows its oversized boxy shape well.
On the dressform.... love the 3/4 cuffed sleeves!  The sleeves and the unique side seams are what drew me to this pattern as I was wanting a sweatshirt, but did not want an ordinary sweatshirt.
This photo below shows how the pocket hung down in a most unsightly way.  It's only attached to each front diagonal side seam and bottom hem..... not at the top.... and it just did not work for me.  One could probably top-stitch the top down, but I did not want an extra seam there.  And honestly, I like it so much better without the pocket.  It hangs and drapes nicely now.
Showing the diagonal side seams in both front....
.....and back.  Where it all joins together under the arm, reminded me of piecing a block for a quilt.
This neck was wide on me, so cut my neckband @2" shorter than pattern and it is still a little wide.  When I make it again, I'll narrow the front and back a little.  Always seem to have that problem.  Anyway, neckband was serged on, then twin-needle stitched down.  The hem was also serged then stitched with the twin-needle and was thrilled there was no channeling in either place!  Fabric is French Terry purchased from JoAnn's.    Love this soft pink color!!
And love this girl so much!  Suzi and I have been working hard on obedience and she is such a 'pleaser' she is easy to train.  She was off-leash the entire time we worked on the outdoor photographs and she stayed right by my side.  It may have helped that my pockets held her favorite dog treats that were freely given.  ;)
These photographs were taken in a hidden meadow in the back of our property.  Always an enchanting place to me as you emerge from the heavily wooded forest trail to a wide open, blue-sky clearing.
Happy Sewing Everyone!  :)

  3. So happy to see this pattern made up! I think I have enough leftover knit from a skirt to try a colorblocked version (oooh, scary). Too bad about the pocket, it would be so handy. Love your soft pink.

    1. This was a great Burda issue..... but it seems most of the recent issues have added lots of items to my sewing queue! Sometimes I'm not sure if I like boxy tops, but I surely do like this sweatshirt! Look forward to seeing your version too!! Thank you!! :)

  6. Lisa, did you use a light weight polarfleece fabric or a cotton blended sweatshirt fabric? If the latter, where did you get your fabric?

    1. This fabric is a soft cotton french terry purchased at JoAnn's last year. I included a direct link to the fabric about mid-way in the above post and found that JoAnn's still has it available. It's funny because I was actually looking for sweatshirt material and JoAnn's was out at the time, so I 'settled' for this french terry..... and LOVE it! Making another now out of the same french terry only in a soft blue. And there is a mint green french terry hoodie almost complete..... lovely fabric. :)

  8. Yes, those pockets had to go. Now you have a sleek but slouchy, very wearable sweater, in a glorious colour. The neckband looks so neat too. Just the right sort of top for doggy training.

    1. And that's exactly what I was wanting.... something that could keep me warm, look 'nice' yet casual enough to walk and work with my sweet pup! It made me sad to take out the pockets.... oh boy, how I wanted those pockets!!.... but the shirt works much better this way. Thank you Sarah Liz! :)
